An estimated 1.5 million students likely qualify for gifted programs but haven’t been identified. On Tuesday, September 24, at 3 PM EST, Drs. Naglieri, Brulles, and Lansdowne discussed universal screening using the Naglieri General Ability Tests. These tests assess verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative skills independently of language.
Key takeaways included:
The Naglieri General Ability Tests, developed by Dr. Jack A. Naglieri, Dr. Dina M. Brulles, and Dr. Kimberly Lansdowne, were designed to provide a fair and accurate measure of general ability. These assessments allow students to demonstrate their reasoning skills, ensuring that identification for advanced learning programs is based on how well students think, rather than what they know.
Traditional methods of identifying gifted students often emphasize verbal and quantitative knowledge, making it difficult for some students to demonstrate their true abilities. In this presentation, Dr. Dina Brulles, Dr. Kimberly Lansdowne, and Dr. Jack Naglieri discuss how the Naglieri General Ability Tests offer a different approach—one that measures how well students think, rather than what they know.

This webinar explores how local norms can be used to identify a broad range of students for gifted educational services. Presenters discuss how local norming applies to the Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative versions of the Naglieri General Ability Tests (Naglieri, Brulles & Lansdowne, 2021) and share research demonstrating that these assessments yield consistent results across race, ethnicity, gender, and parental education levels.
Presented at the NACG 67th Annual Virtual Convention on October 14, 2020.

The Naglieri General Ability Tests, developed by Dr. Jack A. Naglieri, Dr. Dina M. Brulles, and Dr. Kimberly Lansdowne, were created to provide a fair and accurate way to assess general ability. These tests were designed to ensure that students are identified based on their reasoning skills rather than background knowledge or academic achievement.
Dr. Jack A. Naglieri examines the role of IQ tests in identifying gifted students. Many traditional group and individual intelligence tests are influenced by prior knowledge, which can lead to lower scores for students who have had fewer academic opportunities. This issue, first documented over 100 years ago in Army Mental Tests by Yoakum and Yerkes, remains a critical challenge today.
Presented at the National Association of School Psychologists 2021 Virtual Convention, February 2021.
