The Naglieri General Ability Tests

Measure General Intellectual Ability from Multiple Perspectives

The Naglieri General Ability Tests- Verbal (Naglieri-V: Naglieri & Brulles, 2021), Naglieri General Ability Tests- Nonverbal (Naglieri-NV, Naglieri, 2021), and Naglieri General Ability Tests- Quantitative (Naglieri-Q: Naglieri & Lansdowne, 2021) were designed to allow students to solve problems regardless of the language they speak and significantly reduce the amount of formal knowledge required so tests measure how well students 'think', rather than what students 'know'.

Test Design

Test directions, content, and student verbal responses are often obstacles for some gifted students. We created general ability tests that have verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal content without (a) test questions that require knowledge, (b) the use of a specific language, (c) instructions that demand verbal comprehension, and (d) without requiring a student to respond verbally.

Animated Instructions

Test directions are provided using language-free animated instructions to allow the students to understand the format regardless of language.

Test Questions

The three tests were specifically designed to measure thinking (i.e., general ability) with minimum influence of knowing. All the test questions require a student to recognize the relationships among pictures, shapes, or numbers to arrive at the correct answer. All three of these tests reflect how well a student can solve the test questions with minimal requirement of knowledge.

Naglieri General Ability Tests: Naglieri-V, Naglieri- Verbal

Naglieri-V

Naglieri-NV

Naglieri-NV

The Naglieri-V test uses universally recognized pictures that are appropriate across cultures, representing verbal concepts, rather than presenting questions orally or in writing. The test questions require students to understand the relationships among six pictures to determine what verbal concept is shared by five of the pictures and which does not represent the concept.

Naglieri General Ability Tests: Naglieri-NV, Naglieri- Nonverbal

Naglieri-NV

Naglieri-NV

The Naglieri-NV test is comprised of questions that are presented using diagrams and pictorial formats. These questions require the students to decipher the logic behind the relationships among shapes, their color, sequences, orientation, etc. to determine which option completes the pattern.

Naglieri General Ability Tests: Naglieri-Q, Naglieri- Quantitative

Naglieri-Q

Naglieri-NV

Naglieri-Q

The Naglieri-Q test is composed of questions that are presented using numbers and shapes arranged in a pattern. The test items require students to examine the relationship, patterns, and sequences among numbers and/or symbols using basic math concepts. There are no math word problems so the items can be solved regardless of language(s).

A Closer Look at Fair and Accessible Identification

Administering the Naglieri General Ability Tests

Drs. Naglieri, Brulles, and Lansdowne continue the conversation, exploring how the Naglieri General Ability Tests are administered and how they support fair identification practices. Learn how these assessments are designed to ensure every student has the opportunity to demonstrate their potential.

Gifted vs. Talented

While the terms “gifted” and “talented” are often used interchangeably, they have distinct meanings. In this video, the authors of the Naglieri General Ability Tests explore the differences between the two and discuss the importance of making gifted identification more accessible for all students.

National vs. Local Norms: Understanding the Difference

Traditionally, educators have compared students' performance to national norms, but the Naglieri General Ability Tests highlight the importance of local norms, considering the unique characteristics of each school district. In this discussion, the authors explore the advantages of using both national and local norms for more accurate identification, acknowledge the challenges, and propose strategies to overcome them effectively.
